The Tower's phenomena, and Focus

Added D-291, D-303, D-304 The Pressure. Around a minute into a fight, the Tower bears down. The air thickens; the surroundings seem to close in and collapse around the fight. It weighs on both sides, and creatures feel it too. When it has passed, everything is as it was, and survivors disagree about what they saw. What it is, and why fights call it, is a mystery (§2). How it plays: GAMEPLAY §12.

The Weather. Climbers say "the Tower breathes": the air moves through the shafts in long cycles, sometimes heavy and damp, sometimes dry and still. The Weather names come from the saying (Short Breath, Long Breath, Still Air, Damp, Dry). It is folk language for real air currents; whether the Tower is alive is never settled (§2).

Focus. There is no magic. Every Active is a technique, a tool, or a device made from Tower or creature material (GAMEPLAY §7).

Amended D-311, D-312 Technology takes fantasy names. Tower tech is so far beyond anything the mundane world makes that it looks like magic. People arrive at the frontier from realms that have never seen it; they do not understand it, so they describe it with the only words they have for the impossible, the vocabulary of fantasy. A fire mage is someone with a Tower-stone projector that they call a fire staff; a gun may be a wand; a healer with creature medicine is a hedge-witch; firing a device is casting a spell. A mage may look the classic part, with robes, a hat and a staff, or carry an obvious gun and call it a wand: human technology has a modern twist.

Belief is split. Some people believe it is magic. Others, of a scientific or engineering bent, see it as what it is: human-made technology built on an extraordinary material. Both use the same words. The narration never confirms magic: nothing in the world is magic.

Focus is the game's name for a unit's readiness to use its Active: the fighter setting their feet, the device building heat, the creature coiling. It is not an energy or a substance, and the world has no lore of it.
